The Chicago Cubs took a step toward narrowing the opening day roster by trimming nine players from their Spring roster. The players cut were outfielders Matt Murton, Albert Almora, Juan Carlos Perez, John Andreoli, utility player Kristopher Negron, first baseman Jesus Guzman. Three right-hand pitchers Brandon Gomes, Jean Machi and Ryan Williams were cut as well.

Matt Murton's chances were hampered by an appendectomy, and will have work at AAA to get back to the Major Leagues. It is unlikely, he won't get an offer elsewhere to play at the Major League level. None of the nine were expected to make the roster. Brandon Gomes struggled this spring, and could be released. Jean Machi had a decent spring, and could attract interest elsewhere. Ryan Williams could see some big league time with the Cubs this season.
