Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times is reporting David Carpenter has signed a minor league contract with the Rays. Carpenter was released by the Braves this spring after tossing one scoreless inning. Carpenter was a significant part of the 2013-2014 bullpen. In 2015, Carpenter struggled with shoulder inflammation while tossing only 24 innings with the Yankees, and Nationals.
The Rays hope Carpenter returns to his 2013-2014 form. He is still under team control through the 2017 season as well. His fastball was clocked at 95, despite a drop in his strike out rate from 9.9 per nine in 2014, compared to only 5.5 in 2015. If Carpenter can return to form, he could provide a significant piece to the Rays bullpen. On a minor league pact, he is worth the look for the Rays,
