Joe Maddon has named Cy Young award winner Jake Arrieta as the Opening Day starter for the Cubs against the Angels. Arrieta is coming off a 22-6 record with a 1.77 ERA. He allowed 5.9 hits, 1.9 walks, and struck out 9.3 batters per nine innings of work. Arrieta worked 249.1 innings in 2015 (including postseason appearances), his highest previous total was in 2014 at 156.2 innings.
The Cubs plan cut back on his Spring Training workload, and his innings during the season will be monitored. The Cubs will do the same for Jon Lester, and John Lackey as they expect a deep run into the postseason. Clayton Richard, Trevor Cahill, Travis Wood, and Adam Warren should pickup additional innings in an effort to keep the starters healthy.
